San Francisco is one of the most politically progressive cities in the United States. It also happens to be one of the wealthiest cities in the country. And yet, the educational outcomes for black and Latino children in San Francisco lag far behind those for their white peers.
Somehow, in a place where progressives hold the power in city and state government to implement policies derived from their values, 58 points divide white children from their black peers in both reading and math. For Latino students, the gap is 49 points. Communities and activists are demanding that the “City by the Bay” uphold its progressive values of equal opportunity and pledge to reduce the educational disparities between white students and their black and brown peers.
