There’s a citywide reading crisis in Oakland, with fewer than 30% percent of black and Latino students proficient in reading. An astonishing 52 points stand between black and white students in reading, while 47 points separate Latino and white students. This should be a wake-up call for a progressive hub like Oakland to start relying on its progressive values to do the work that’s required to achieve the equity and opportunity the city values.
